A few years a go, Amani Justine Kenneth aka Yo Boy Ken was an underground rapper known by a few of us on the streets of Arua City, an aspiring rap artist in cyphers or one would simply think he was a wannabe street rapper trying to claim his spot or put words together and confuse us.
He has added more memories and musical satisfaction to this year already. He did not have to put up a state of the art music recording studio, or have his home made Yo Studios one of the household production names in west Nile first. He promised to drop his first studio album this year and has done it. He finally dropped his long awaited Up The Sleeves Hip Hop album on 30th September.
He has been in the rap movement under Team Deadly Music, a group founded by Kakwa rapper Staid Pizzy and that housed rappers like Edemz NXTBT, Jay Roma among others.
Team Deadly Music is where I first heard of Yo Boy Ken the rapper but not the new guy who dropped a new solo album on 30th September 2020, threw a mad Birthday party and a listener’s party for his close friends, associates, family and fans.
Well, we are talking about the one and only Amani Justine Kenneth we popularly know as Yo Boy Ken. He is a musician who will sing Gospel songs that will take you to heaven while on earth, a rapper who will spit the most ear catching rhymes and steal your ears from the beginning of the song to its end, a self-taught music producer and sound guru who does what six to ten music people would do all by himself as a solo producer of his music and a die hard believer in West Nile Music and entertainment. a recording Hip Hop artist, music producer, photographer, video producer, song writer, IT hustler and a West Nile son who hails Maracha district. Yo Boy Ken will take breathtaking photos and give you lasting impressions of your memories at Ken Photography, produce a documentary for you, shoot videos and merely do anything.
2019 was a big year for him as he successfully released his first EP called Afro Trap EP to the world. The six track EP brought him a promising music following by fans, friends, associates etc. who fell in love with his unique music style and remained in full anticipation of his new album Up The Sleeve.
From the title Afro Trap EP, one could already guess that the EP was a fusion of Afro and Trap music styles.
A significant song on the EP called Am Done caught fire right from the first day of the release of the EP. Yo Boy dedicated Am Done to a lover, delivered smooth love vocals to express his love to her. He declares to her that he stopped following or chasing after all the ladies on finding this special lady. In case you missed catching songs on the Afro Trap EP, there were 5 songs on it namely; Faith freestyle, Slower (baby), Am Done, Lord So Nice, Long road ft. Jobian Tick and Black Lion as a bonus song.

Yes. The EP was a well baked and composed together compilation by a musician who is good at what he does best while making sounds inside his home studio Yo Boy Beats.
One unique rapper and self-styled old school rapper known as Rap Nexxy, the elder brother to Yo Boy Ken is one person who made me know his younger bro. Rap Nexxy used to drop radio adverts and put some rap lines to it while working on one of the radios in Arua City. His loud and deep voice became a signature on radio and in 2015, Rap Nexxy featured on Gbaraspoken Emcee‘s Jomic Studio recorded North Face Cypher alongside other West Nile rappers. When you listen to Rap Nexxy, a popular basketballer in Arua and Gulu, you will definitely have an idea of what his younger bro Yo Boy Ken could possibly put on his new album Up The Sleeve that he dropped on his birthday. Under Team Deadly Music, Yo Boy found a platform to start rapping and soon he was on Team Deadly Music’s 2016 cypher project and did record a few songs to his name.
Since 2018, Yo Boy works closely with his team that pushes his music, is friends and relates closely with West Nile artists, music producers and having kept underground and unknown to fans for some time, finally made terms with his team and friends and decided to come out to the world.
He goes by his Rap and Producer name Jay Roma born Jimmy Carter, a long time friend of Yo Boy, an underground Hip Hop music producer, Rapper at Yo Studios, one of the co-founders and co-producers at Yo Studios.
One of Yo Boy‘s major support systems comes from this long time brother and friend born Jimmy Carter, a fellow we are here to let you discover and know more. Whenever he makes beats at Yo Studios, most listeners take his work for the international market or mistake him simply as one of the underground New York hip hop producers.
The two brothers have set out to redefine good music and also sell music beats of all genres to musicians.
2020 will remain a remarkable year in our lives due to Covid-19 and Yo Boy Ken already booked a spot on that. We waited for so long for his new album after the artist announced its drop earlier this year.
Amani Justine Kenneth, a born of September 30th could not wait any longer but put smiles on the faces of his fans and music lovers as he celebrated his birthday on Wednesday 30th September with a listener’s party and release of his new album Up the Sleeve.
Due to the standard operating procedures, Yo Boy’s birthday party, Up The Sleeve album release and listener’s party was attended by invites only at Sanctuary Hotel, Ediofe Town, Arua City. The event that housed over fifty of Yo Boy’s friends, family, associates and fans was graced by Gbaraspoken Emcee and with major appearances by Communications expert Mama Afrika, Singer and producer Dj Poppa, Yo Studios co-producer Jay Roma, Video maker Mike Legent, YCM Chippa, ESB, Panda, Run King UG, One Shot photography, Darwin Alesi among other notables in the birthday and Up The Sleeve album listener’s party.
Earlier this year, I got an invitation by Yo Boy Ken to an exclusive listening session of his Up The Sleeve album at Yo Studios. When the right time clocked, I headed there for I already had an idea of what Yo Boy Ken could possibly do. We had a long discussion about his past, his Afro Trap EP, his first studio album Up the Sleeve and West Nile music in general.
He gave me a thorough listen to his fifteen track new album Up The Sleeve. At the end, it was more than what I had anticipated of the invite. I ended up being astonished by my findings.
Let us start with the story of how he started Yo Boy Studios and Yo Boy Beats more than three years a go. The journey started with that of the young and visionary rapper’s love for God, passion for art, his love for singing and rapping and the do it yourself words running from his head to his fingers.
”I believed that I would get what I put my hands on if I put hard work to it.”
Years a go, it was a real hustle story to start Yo Boy Studios. I would say it was the story of a child who had love for putting old items together to make new items for fun. Just like this particular child who fastened dry cells together, connected two electric cables to the positive and negative terminals of the cells , joined them to the circuit terminals of a bulb and finally, the bulb lit leaving his face glowing, Yo Boy Ken and his studio all make one inspiring from scratch or nothing to something story and that of the humble beginnings of a West Nile musician, his home studio and the growth of Yo Boy Ken as a brand.
With no disrespect meant at all, Yo Boy Ken, you will allow me relate the story you narrated to me of Yo Studios to that of a child who played with old electric gadgets, made new stuff out of them and found happiness in doing it.
One time, it was close to boxes cut together nicely by an artistic hand, mattress pieces put together using do it yourself art skills that worked as a booth, hung a studio recording microphone on for voicing, a pair of basic home entertainment speakers or a radio system connected and playing sound as studio monitor speakers, a laptop wired to the other equipment as a young visionary tech fanatic turned a guru in the names of Yo Boy Ken happily made a fool of himself while teaching himself the FL production software that he has matsered today as he sat in front of the machines, watched his reverse engineering infrastructure gather and believed that one day it would be a different story all together.
After a few years, the story has changed the life of Yo Boy Ken and his music hustles.
I also realized that Yo Boy‘s friends and visitors like me always ended up swallowed deeply in to the magical music his makes. When he plays his final work or exports a song from his computer, one will testify that Yo Boy is indeed a game changer and has brought in new vibes to West Nile music and entertainment.
“Up The Sleeves, is my first studio album. It is isnpired by my old prinary school teacher who frequently teased me for my versatility in skills, in school activities and class. That teacher of mine always questioned what I would pick life to focus on because of my Jack of all trades nature. The album is also a statement to myself and all those who believe in my music that we can do anything musically from here in Arua City and West Nile. I couldn’t do it alone. I had to feature our own stars like Gbaraspoken Emcee, IsaaGhad and Dj Poppa on Up The Sleeve album. These are some of the artists who have always believed in me and kept pushing me to give the world my best and I had to tag some of them along.”
To make the statement on his Up The Sleeves album louder, Yo Boy added;
”The album also speaks about the competence it takes for one to build confidence in himself or herself, the challenges we as young people in this region go through to achieve our dreams and how our sisters and brothers should never give up while following their dreams. This album took the best of my work time, was made with love and hard work, as its executive producer and on behalf of my team, w made it with love nd this is my gift to all my fans, friends who have supported me and to God for standing by me and us.”
The result on Up The Sleeve made me fall in love with the first song on the album Sleeve featuring Gbaraspoken Emcee and to warn the listener to respect this new kid.
Beware of Yo Boy Ken and the new fifteen track Up The Sleeve album. It is one of the the most promising compilations a west Nile artist has dropped this year, tells the story of a new and inspiring musician who put together a groovy musical production carrying entertaining, educative and quality music your girlfriend would never refuse or any good music listener out there would fall in for once or even die for.
